Kaiju No. 8 is a shonen manga and anime that follows the story of Kafka Hibino, a disillusioned 32-year-old who works a menial job cleaning up the carcasses of giant monsters called kaiju. Having failed his Defense Force entrance exams multiple times, he had long given up on his childhood dream of fighting alongside his friend, the successful and renowned Defense Force captain, Mina Ashiro. However, his life is turned upside down when a small, parasitic kaiju flies into his mouth, transforming him into a powerful, humanoid monster.
Dubbed “Kaiju No. 8” by the Defense Force, Kafka must now navigate a dual existence: using his newfound powers to secretly fight the kaiju threat while attempting to pass the Defense Force exams one last time. He is motivated by his encounter with a determined young recruit, Reno Ichikawa, who reawakens Kafka’s desire to join the force and make good on his promise to Mina. The story is a blend of intense kaiju battles, workplace comedy, and the emotional drama of a man seeking a second chancesiege.
